A dehydration. A fall. Each death shaped by the particular geography of a fear the victim would never have admitted holding.
The Compass does not create fear. It finds the fear already there, the one buried so deep the person carrying it has learned to navigate around it without ever looking at it directly. The trail runs from Monaco to Barcelona to a sixteenth-century wreck in forty-seven meters of Atlantic water, and then into harder territory, because the compass acts on whoever is standing in front of it.
