Norway, 1943. A Nazi officer pries open a frozen chapel floor and finds a chest bound in ice. Inside, vellum pages covered in ink that should have faded centuries ago. Then the bombers come, the chest breaks open, and the pages lift into the smoke like startled birds.
The Codex does not stay whole. It disperses, and dispersion turns out to be how memory survives. For eighty years the fragments have been sleeping in cold places, in archives and wall cavities and diplomatic pouches that crossed borders under false names.
The rules are simple. Keep it cold. Keep it dark. Do not let the pages touch. Because when the fragments come together they do not merely reveal information, they remember. The Mask took voices. The Codex takes the certainty that you know what is true.
